The Destitute

“…happiness has become just another illusion. It is no longer a matter of enhancing emotions or sustaining feelings; and it no longer has a place between the inner self and reason. Instead, it is a matter of satiating a physical body that, as long as it lives, cannot be satiated. It is a matter of feeding senses which, when fed, only become more avaricious and grasping so that they are sufficed only when they are rendered senseless. Happiness, therefore resides in an unknown and undefined place amongst the senses, like the place between what a needy person longs for and what he actually finds. Thus happiness, using this meaning, is no more than the state of always being prepared to be happy… and that is patently absurd.”
